ISSUE INTRODUCTION
June 16, 2007

Article 50

For the first time, the Patriots got to feel what it is like being the veteran team on the field as it faced the
expansion Lenawee County Crusaders in Sand Creek June 23. After years of being the young team on the
block, the Royal and Scarlet took advantage of its experiences and ran away with a 51-14 win. Twice more the
team will meet up with an expansion ball club this season as the new Tri-City Titans are a Eastern Lakes Division
rival. The feeling will not last long though as the team will host one of Michigan's most storied Minor League
teams in the Southern Michigan Timberwolves on July 7 in Flint.
THE TEAM
The new offense produced 37 of 51 points while in Sand Creek, the most ever produced by the team in its
history. Rookie quarterback Robert Callahan filled the shoes of departed Saginaw Valley State University
Quarterback Ted Klopf nicely in his debut, passing for two touchdowns and running in another. Another first year
player, Jerry Weston, took over the roll of number one receiver left vacant by 2 time All Star Keith Gardner and
caught two touchdowns. The running game was also established well with three other touchdowns coming on the
ground.  Veterans Dorian Ford (C), Brad Lyon (RG), and Jesse Church (RT) were joined by the rotation of
Shannon Payne (LT) and Zach Rivest (LT) while Tamonta Hill (LG) filled in for injured Josh Wentworth. This
offensive line showed the potential to be the top offensive line the Patriots have ever assembled.

On the defensive side, players at nearly every position got to experience regular rotation during the game with
the Crusaders. Which was valuable experience that would not normally be available. Back up players such as
veterans Andy Tvorik (NG) and Chris Dinnan (DE) got to see a considerable amount of snaps and proved they
could be effective reliable players in the rotation. Meanwhile new faces like Tom Cole (OLB) and Sidney Hoyle
(OLB) were eager to make a name for themselves as both scored defensive touchdowns.
AROUND THE NAFL
Other NAFL teams have seen preseason action in the Eastern Lakes Division including the Michigan Admirals
and Detroit Diesels. The Admirals, defending Division Champions, took on the Racine Raiders. The Raiders are
one of the nation's top franchises and have existed since 1953. The game was a classic 50-44 OT loss for the
Admirals after Racine rallied from a 14 point deficit with under 2 minutes left.

The Diesels did not have an easy contest either as they experienced a out of league match up with MCFL
Champion West Michigan Force. The Force showed they were just that with a 53-7 win over Detroit.
ON THE WIRE
As we have in each issue, the Patriot Insider will once again feature new additions to the team.

Jesse Church, OT, 6'8" 288 lbs. - Tawas, Michigan
The former Grand Rapids Thunder lineman is a great addition to the Patriot Line. The Thunder's success in the
past few seasons provided Church with a great learning opportunity in his Minor League rookie year. His frame
offers him rare athleticism for a lineman which helps to make him an instant competitor for the starting rotation at
offensive tackle. He also has the ability to play Defensive End, giving the Patriots another versatile lineman.

Jerry Weston, WR, 6'0" 155 lbs. -Flint, Michigan
Though this is only the first year of the new Patriot Coaching Staff, Weston has a rare jump on having worked
with Head Coach Andre Weathers and Quarterbacks Coach Fred Jackson. Weston was an All City Wide
Receiver for Flint Central High School where Jackson was the Offensive Coordinator and Weathers was the
Defensive Coordinator.
