ISSUE INTRODUCTION
October 8, 2006

Article 39
It is back to the drawing board again for the Patriots as we enter the 2007
off season. A 1-9 regular season does not leave many options, but it also
does not leave room for things to get much worse. The bright side to the
season was looking at how close the team was to turning the corner.

With four losses by four points, it remains obvious that improvement did
take place, just not in the win column. An even deeper look at those
games shows that in all four, the Patriots held the lead at some point. In
two other games, the team let a halftime lead slip away.

Excuses have come in loads over the seasons and every team has
injuries. Yet, you cannot over look the difficulty for an offense to produce
that was forced to start its third string quarterback at mid season and the
third string running back in only its third game. Behind an often depleted
offensive line you can almost understand how a team can loose 6-2 to a
4-2 team or 10-6 to a playoff qualifier.

In the end though, excuses do not fill stadium seats. This is a team that
once put 2,100 fans into the stands to watch a slug feast as the Royal
and Scarlet won a 19-18 contest over the Tigers in 2004. Rest assured,
Patriot management is dedicated to putting together a team that will bring
those fans back.
THE TEAM
Art Sleight's Hall of Fame nomination is deserved after 27 years on the
sidelines. But his retirement once again has the Patriots looking to find a
new man for the helm in 2007.

The Head Coach role will not be the only one to be filled in the off
season. Defensive Coordinator Brad Lyon has put up the clip board to
return to the field once again. Meanwhile, Offensive Coordinator Ted
Klopf may again suit up to compete for the starting Quarterback position,
his decision has yet to be made but is expected once the Head Coaching
position has been filled. You may remember Klopf, a former SVSU and
Olivet College QB, held that role until an injury ruined his season at
McHenry County. Jon Becher, who held the role of offensive line coach,
remains the Interim Head Coach and is expected to be interviewed for the
position.

Players begin off season study quickly. Following the NAFL
Championship Weekend, the resigned veterans will start regularly
scheduled film study and position work outs. Joining them will be several
rookie and free agent signings the team will make prior to the combine. A
new scouting department is being added to the organization this off
season to help select the best crop of new faces that will make the team
playoff bound in 2007.
AROUND THE NAFL
Playoffs are in full swing and the battle for the Great Lakes Region Title is
nearing. The Michigan Admirals, seeded second in the region, were
awarded an early BYE when the London Silverbacks elected to drop to
NAFL2. Meanwhile the top seeded Hoosier Hurricanes look to host the
mighty Kane County Eagles in the second round. Kane County got past a
spirited Columbus Fire 22-7 in round one.

The winner of the Hoosier and Kane County contest will face the winner of
the Michigan Admirals and their second round opponent Pittsburgh Colts.
The Colts defeated the New Castle Thunder 13-3 in round one.

Last season Kane County took home the Great Lakes Region Title and
advanced to the Northern Conference Championship with a win over
Pittsburgh. This year both teams are traveling in the second round which
will make a repeat of that game very difficult.
