HISTORY
The Patriots were founded in September of 2002 by the father and son business team
of Leo and Brad Lyon. The team entered its first season of competition in the Ohio
Valley Football League in 2003. However, the team's first game was played June 7th,
2003 against the North American Football League's Detroit Downriver Diesels. Over
1,200 fans came out to watch the Patriots in their inaugural game at Atwood
Stadium, the 11,000 seat, city owned home of the Genesee County Patriots. The
Diesels won that contest 37-0 and began what was a tough opening campaign.

The Patriots lost both pre-season games that year but captured the team's first win
June 21st to open up the OVFL regular season at the Toledo Seminoles.

Expansion team blues was realized though as the Patriots went on to finish the year
2-10. The season was highlighted with a close battle at home against the 2002
defending NFC Division Champion Michigan Titans 0-6.

In 2004, the Patriots made two major moves. Pride Stadium, home of the Clio Mustangs,
became the new host to the Patriots. The team followed that with even bigger news as it
joined the North American Football League (NAFL). With the move came a couple
memorable games including a 20-18 win over 2003 playoff qualifier Northwest Tigers
and a 33-6 win over the Renegades.

In 2005, Head Coach William Donahue orchestrated a 3-5-1 season in his only season
as Head Coach. The season ended with a tough 10-17 loss to the Hamilton Screaming
Eagles which would have forced a three way tie for the last play off spot and a rematch
with the Michigan Admirals had the results went the other way.

As of the 2006 season, the Patriots have had 4 official head coaches. Mike Cannon was
named the first ever head coach of the Patriots but never took the field as coach. John
Thomas led the team in its inaugural campaign and into 2004 where he
was later replaced in mid-season, on an interim basis by Defensive Coordinator Doug
Palmer. In the following off season, William Donahue was promoted to the title of Head
Coach after serving as the Offensive Coordinator in 2004. Art Sleight was selected to
Coach the team in 2006.
